What is a Crane Wire Rope?

Crane wire rope, often referred to simply as wire rope, is a sturdy and flexible cable composed of multiple steel wires twisted together to form a helix. This construction provides the rope with exceptional strength and durability, making it ideal for lifting and hoisting heavy loads.

In 1834, the European Olubert invented the world's first wire rope (glossy wire rope). Domestic is established in 1939, Tianjin City, the first wire rope factory put into production.

Steel wire rope in various industrialized countries are standard products, can be used according to the need to choose its diameter, the number of rope strands, the number of wires per strand, tensile strength and adequate safety factor.

Components of Crane Wire Rope:

  1. Wire Strands: These are individual steel wires that make up the rope. The number of strands can vary, with 6x19 and 6x37 being common configurations. The first number represents the number of wire strands in the core, while the second represents the number of wire strands in the outer layer.
  2. Core: The core is the central part of the wire rope, around which the wire strands are twisted. There are two main types of cores: fiber cores (FC) and independent wire rope cores (IWRC). Fiber cores consist of natural or synthetic materials, while IWRC cores are made of steel wires.
  3. Lay: The lay of a wire rope refers to the direction in which the wires and strands are twisted. There are two main types of lay: regular lay and lang lay. Regular lay means the wires are twisted in the opposite direction to the strands, while lang lay means they are twisted in the same direction.

Wire Rope Production Process


1.Drawing

Ordinary round steel, let it through the hole than its diameter is a little smaller than the forced pull through, the diameter of the round steel will become smaller, the length will be elongated, and constantly repeat this process, then the round steel will be further reduced to form the rope-making steel wire (general diameter range of 0.2mm-3.1mm), and then after tempering after the second pulling. The strength of the wire rope is pulled out of the wire drawing. The higher the general strength, the stronger the pull, but wear resistance and flexibility is relatively weak. Therefore, the wire rope is not the higher the strength the better.

2. Twisting

Twist the wire into strands according to certain rules.

3.Oil coating and galvanizing

Coating with oil to prevent rust, galvanizing, aluminizing, etc.

4.Coiling

Rolling the rope strands into coils for the next step.

5.Combining

The process of producing wire rope by arranging the strands around the core centerline in a spiral line on the rope closing machine.

Wire Rope Winding Method

The winding direction of the wire rope on the reel depends on the direction of the left and right twisting direction of the wire rope winding on the reel, according to the direction that makes the wire rope twisted tightly. The cross-twisted wire rope is not easy to loosen because of its own small rotation, the structure is not easy to loosen and it can be adapted to the left and right rotating reels.

Common Faults and Causes of Wire Rope

1. Wire breakage caused by overload
Reason: The load is large, and the stress exceeds its tensile strength
Characteristics: The port is a macro "cup-cone" shape

2. Normal fatigue breakage
Reason: Under normal load, repeated bending
A certain period of time after the surface layer of steel wire fatigue breakage
Characteristics: The general surface layer of steel wire has been ground flat

3. Lamp (bird) cage phenomenon
Reason: The load is released, causing the strand, and the wire can't
Restore the original position
Characteristics: present "lantern" and "birdcage-like"

4. Early fatigue breakage
Reason: Rope-cutting operation or other bad habits lead to a section of the wire rope for a long time to withstand continuous loading
Characteristics: Outer layer breakage

5. Periodic breakage
Reason: Splicing, improper bundling of rope head, local wire rope kinking caused by individual strands of raised, resulting in the priority of the raised strands to be worn out, early breakage of wire
Characteristics: Periodic appearance of raised strands on the surface of the rope and breakage.

6. Maraging breakage
Reason: Poor contact with wheel groove or high-speed friction with other objects.
Heat-generated surface martensitization breakage
Characteristics: Cracks on the surface of the wire, brittle.

7. The wire strands are misaligned due to twisting.
Reason: Improper operation of rope pulling, installation, and use, resulting in the slack section of the wire rope being twisted and misaligned.
Characteristics: steel wire, strand misalignment

8. Cracking of strand rope caused by extrusion
Reason: In a small reel, heavy load, or multi-layer winding, the surface of the rope is extruded.
Characteristics: localized strand collapse

9. Localized abrasion caused by improper repair of the rope groove
Reason: improper size and shape of groove repair, resulting in localized abrasion of wire rope.
Characteristics: localized fracture and deformation of the outer strand.

10. Inter-strand extrusion, wear and tear fracture
Reason: A large load, small groove, or core support failure will cause strong extrusion between the strands, and friction, resulting in inter-strand wire fracture.
Characteristics: inter-strand steel wire wear, fracture

11. Rope breakage caused by groove jumping
Reason: Slack wire rope or rope groove leads to wire rope slipping to the rope groove outside the pulley and sideboard pieces, leading to excessive bending and load-bearing breakage of the wire rope.
Characteristics: The macro-diameter of the rope head is reduced, and the wire strand breakage is uneven.

12. External corrosion
Reason: Inadequate maintenance, lack of oil, or exceeding the rust prevention period.

Wire Rope Classification

1.By twisting method (structure):

  • Single twist rope: Single twist rope is made by twisting the steel wire into strands.
  • Double twisted rope: By the strand rope (can also be said to be a single-twisted rope) twisted rope is called double-twisted rope. The most widely used, general lifting wire rope for this structure.
  • Three-twisted rope: Double twisted rope as a strand twisted and called triple twisted rope, generally used for wire rope with a diameter of 60mm or more, such as offshore wire rope.

2. According to the diameter:

  • Fine diameter wire rope, that is, diameter <8mm wire rope
  • Ordinary diameter wire rope, that is, diameter ≥ 8 <60mm wire rope
  • Coarse diameter wire rope, that is, diameter ≥ 60mm wire rope

3. According to the use of points:

  • General-purpose wire rope (including strand)
  • Wire rope for elevator
  • Wire rope for aviation 
  • Wire ropes for drilling deep well equipment
  • Wire ropes for aerial ropeways and cable cars 
  • Steel wire rope for lifting
  • Steel strand for prestressed concrete
  • Steel wire rope for fishery
  • Steel wire rope for mine hoisting
  • Steel cord for tires
  • Steel wire rope for tape

4. According to the surface state:

  • Smooth wire rope (Uncoated) 
  • Galvanized steel wire rope: Galvanized layer provides anodic protection and corrosion resistance.
  • Plastic coated wire rope: Aesthetically pleasing, structurally stable, shock-absorbing and crush-resistant

5. According to the twisting characteristics:

  • Point contact wire rope
  • Line contact wire rope
  • Face contact wire rope

6. According to the core:

Rope core function: support the outer strand pressure, keep the rope type intact, increase rope elasticity and toughness, reduce friction, improve life.

  • Fiber core-application of natural fibers (such as sisal, cotton yarn), synthetic fibers and other fibers to meet the requirements of the made. Characteristics: The new sisal core contains 12%-15% grease, with oil lubrication and corrosion resistance, to improve the durability of the wire rope, softer than the steel core. However, it is not suitable for high temperature environment such as metallurgical hoisting, the core is easy to burn to cause the rope structure damage caused by hidden trouble and accidents.
  • Steel core (also called metal core). Characteristics: Wear-resistant and anti-squeeze, higher service life and breaking tension, lower softness than hemp core. The cost is a little higher than hemp core.

Wire Rope Maintenance and Care

  1. Wire rope in operation should be smooth speed, and will not be overloaded operation, to avoid the occurrence of shock load.
  2. The wire rope has to spit enough grease when manufacturing, but after running, the grease will reduce, and the surface of the wire rope will be stained with harmful substances, which will lead to the friction of the wire rope and pulley and the rest of the wire rope, so it should be cleaned and refueled.
  3. The wire rope should be inspected and records should be kept, the regular inspection content is the wear and tear of the wire rope, wire breakage, corrosion, and the wear and tear of the pulley groove, hoisting ring, hook, and other fragile parts, especially the wire rope breakage and fixation, fixed pulley set, the outer and inner wire rope breakage of the reel.
