Crane Hook -Types of Hooks for Cranes

Overhead Traveling Crane is used by more and more industries during production. Crane hook is a key part for electric overhead traveling crane, suitable hook will help a lot in the processing of material handling, loading and unloading In Yuantai Crane Company, crane hooks can be made into different types and shapes.

  1. According to shape, it can be classified into single hook and double hook. The advantage of single hook: easy to made and use, and applied to light capacity. The load capacity of double hook is better, and widely used in heavy capacity.
  2. According to production method, it can be classified into forging hook and chip hook (plate hook). Forging hook is widely used. Chip hook is combined of steel plate and more safety than forging hook.

Hook Group

In order to increase the lifting capacity and reduce the demand of wire rope's diameter, will made the hook and pulley block into one. So this is called hook group. The large lifting appliance always use hook group. Hook group is divided into long hook group and short hook group. When the balanced pulley is installed on the long hook group, the hook group with singular rate has larger lifting capacity. Short hook group applied to double rate one and has smaller capacity.

Crane Hook Material

The hook should have higher strength, plasticity and toughness. Widely adopt low carbon steel and low carbon alloy steel. For example, level M and P hook always adopt DG20Mn; level T, M adopt DG34CrNiMo or DG30Cr2Ni2Mo. In order to avoid strain, adhesive and brittle, ISO suggest the minimum content of Al is 0.02%. The material of hook can take GB10051.1 "Crane Hook" for reference.

Crane Hook Design Should Follow a Few Points:

  1. Considering environmental requirements, it should meet requirements of strength, ductility, toughness, fatigue resistance and impact resistance.
  2. The surface and internal defects should not be enough to damage its availability. Some certificate and other technical documents about the hook material should be provided by the manufacturer, otherwise the inspection should be carried out to identify the performance of qualified.
  3. Meet the design and technology requirements, hook after forging should carry out heat treatment.
  4. The rolling direction and fiber trend of laminate should keep in line with the pressure direction. Must eliminate the heat affected zone is formed by cutting.
  5. If Laminated hook adopts casting method, its applicability must be proved according to actual experience.

The hook that bridge lifting mechanism by human driving adopt, is tested by 1.5 times the rated load. The loading of power driven hook is tested according to the national standard value.Removing the test loading, in the absence of any obvious defects and changes in circumstances, the increase of opening degree should not exceed that of the 0.25%.

Crane Hook Inspection

The hook made of new materials need to do 100% of the mechanical performance test before the quality is stable. The inspection body must conform to the material standards. After inspection of the hook, the manufacturer should make a mark that is not easy to be worn in the proper position of the hook and issue conformity certification. Tagged content as follow:

  1. rated crane capacity.
  2. standard or manufacturer name.
  3. inspection mark.production number.
  4. hook scrapped.
  5. risk profile wear up to 10% of the original size.
  6. aperture ratio increased by 15%.
  7. torsional deformation of more than 10 degrees.
  8. dangerous section or hook neck plastic deformation.
  9. board hook bushing wear up to 50% of the original size, should be scrapped bushing.
  10. plate hook mandrel wear up to 5% of the original size, should be scrapped mandrel.

How to Choose the Right Hook for Cranes or Hoists?

The type of hook you select can have a significant impact on the safety, efficiency, and overall performance of your lifting equipment. When it comes to choosing the right hook for a crane or hoist, there are several important factors to consider.

1. Weight Capacity:
One of the most critical factors to consider when choosing a hook for your crane or hoist is the weight capacity. It's essential to select a hook that is capable of safely lifting the heaviest loads you anticipate working with. Be sure to consider both the maximum load capacity and the working load limit of the hook to ensure that it meets your specific requirements.

2. Hook Design:
There are several different hook designs available, each with its own unique features and benefits. The most common types of hooks include clevis hooks, eye hooks, and swivel hooks. Consider the specific application and requirements of your lifting operation to determine which hook design is best suited for your needs.

3. Material:
Hooks are typically constructed from materials such as alloy steel, carbon steel, or stainless steel. The material of the hook should be chosen based on factors such as the environmental conditions, the type of load being lifted, and any specific industry regulations or standards that apply. For example, stainless steel hooks are often preferred for applications where corrosion resistance is a priority.

4. Safety Features:
Safety should always be a top priority when selecting a hook for your crane or hoist. Look for hooks that are equipped with safety latches or other features designed to prevent accidental disengagement of the load. Additionally, consider whether any specific safety standards or regulations apply to your industry, and ensure that the hook you choose complies with these requirements.

5. Compatibility:
It's important to ensure that the hook you select is compatible with the lifting equipment you will be using. Consider factors such as the size and type of the hoist or crane, as well as any specific attachment or mounting requirements that may impact the compatibility of the hook.

6. Application:
Finally, consider the specific application and operating conditions in which the hook will be used. Factors such as the frequency of use, the angle of loading, and any potential impact or shock loading should be taken into account when choosing a hook that is well-suited for your specific lifting operation.

In conclusion, choosing the right hook for your crane or hoist requires careful consideration of factors such as weight capacity, hook design, material, safety features, compatibility, and application requirements. By taking these factors into account and selecting a hook that meets your specific needs, you can ensure safe and efficient lifting operations. Always consult with a qualified professional if you have any doubts or questions regarding the selection of hooks for your lifting equipment.
